Ever since the beginning, when ladders, hoses - and even buckets - were invented as a way to extinguish fires, there was always a spirit of competition among firefighters as to who could be the first "team" to get the job done. Out of this spirit of competition grew a unique form of racing. What began long ago as simple, unsophisticated footraces have evolved into season-long competitions between numerous rival racing teams. The Carle Place Fire Department "Frogs" Drill Team can be seen each summer participating in these drills. Fire Department Racing helps improve teamwork, leadership and camaraderie between brother firemen. It has also been an excellent method of recruitment for the fire service on Long Island. The "Frogs" can also be found each year in the month of December selling Christmas Trees to the residents of Carle Place.
